Jawaballs Painting Contest

Here is a taste of what is to come! I received 30 entries on time, and 2 late ones. Sorry late guys, you are not eligible for the contest, but I will still post up your entries.

I have to say I am a little surprised at the number of people who failed to follow the instructions! I asked for high res Jpeg attachments, one guy sent me a zip file with compressed Adobe Fireworks files! Lucky for him I had Adobe CS3. At least half of the entries failed to include a mailing address. One was emailed to the wrong email address. :) (he has not received a response yet since I have to go find that email in my other inbox.)

Dont worry, so long as you got your entry in on time, with at least an attempt to show WIP, I am judging it.

Judging Criteria?

To be honest, there is none. I will pick the winners based on which ones tickle my fancy the most. Extreme highlighting, blending, or dry brushing all work. It depends on how you did it.

You should have received an email today as receipt of your entry. I went down the list of emails and saved one of your pictures into a folder with your name on it. Then I responded to your entry with "Entry Registered, thanks! Watch for results soon. Jawaballs" If you entered the contest, but did not receive that email response from me, contact me so we can figue out where it is.

Good luck every one! I should have the results within a week.

When my work schedule superceded the time i was able to devote to this submission, I realized I wasn't going to make the deadline and qualify for a prize. However, winnin prizes wasn't my motivation to enter the 1st JB contest in the first place! This was the first miniature I had painted in just about 20 years! This contest was a fun motivator that allwed me to shake the cobwebs off of my old Citadel paints.
In the end if I'm able to glean some advice from Jawaballs, the experience will be complete!

I thought Brother Captain James was going to pick the winner?

He is the winner! Oh wait, this is not a tournament of middle schoolers at Toy wiz. :)

Wow, what a great model to show off first, makes me a bit ashamed for entering :S

As far as the instructions go, I think I broke all the rules(lol) in my mad dash to get the mini finished and photographed and emails sent; all way too late thursday evening.(i dont recommend painting post 1:00 am btw)

But thanks for putting on this competition Jawa, it was great fun even if I don't come away with any prizes. The feedback on my painting style is also nice to have.

And you love my model the most! (preforms Jedi mind trick)

wow. I was hoping not to be at the bottom of the pack, but if that mini is any indication I need to step up my game. What a beautiful miniature!

That Space Hulk model is really nicely painted. Top notch stuff. Guess there is always second place:) More seriously though, we all are at more or less different levels and a good portion of a comp like this is having fun painting and bettering yourself. I know a guy in Sweden who do comission work for peanuts and can paint stuff at a very high level (hint, I follow his blog), but I much rather take advice from him than have him paint my minis. I'm proud that I paint my own stuff to the best of my talentless abilities and I get happy when I improve.

I look forward to the results and any possible future competition. Wish you would run one more before the end of the year. How about a general anything goes get nuts Blood Angels comp? :)

I agree. the contest was really good for the community. It would be kind of cool to have every blog follower paint up one blood angle to produce an entire chapter. It might make a good charity idea.

Flek man I do commissions and charge an arm and a leg! Stop advertising for my undercutting competition. :) Just joking man. In all honesty, a lot of guys can paint just as well as I can and charge less because they can do it faster. So more power to them!

My next contest will be a lot wider in scope and vision. Maybe I will have every one create a model of their choice beating down a Tau fire warrior. :)

Wow Deagles mini is good. hope i can eventually get a style like that.

*laughs* I was guessing that few people order comissions over the Atlantic so you should be safe:) Besides I might comission something from you as a memento type thing. A cool model to have on display at home rather than to play with.

Oh, and I would rather pay for a real life painting session tutorial than a whole army painted, even if it will take me years to get all my armies done myself:)

oh, and some hate for the Tau that we don't know about?:)

Oh and I like drathmere's suggestion. Paint up a 1500 point army collectivly and auction it off. Give a little loot to whoever we think did the coolest job and give the bulk of the dollares to a good cause we all agree on (Warhammer addiction fund perhaps:p).

If anyone wants to organize something like that I'm game to donate and paint something.

Yes, this was one of the top models and will certainly be in the top few. But I think a lot of you will be surprised. FIrst of all, the top 10 will get something, a full third of the entries, and I would only say there are 3 or 4 of this top tier quality. That means there will be 6 or so guys who did their best but cant compete with the top dogs, but may still get a place. And the last few placers could be one of just about any one who entered. Which means that I dont think I saw any who are flat out not good enough to place. Those last few slots are going to be tough to pick for sure! Way harder then the top few. Every one keep your chins up and keep watch for the results! I will take a stab at them this weekend.
