Hidden Images in the Blood Angels Codex Cover?

I was looking at the Blood Angels codex today and noticed something very interesting. If you look really close, you can see a hidden image!  Observe.

See it?  look closely!

Here is a closeup.

There he is, picking over the corpses. Even in the 40k universe they are disgusting creatures. Tricky little bugger.

More to come...

Whoo-DeeBee! (I think that's the noise Jawas make)

I'll get my new post out to you by Saturday, Lab has been crazy this week. It's like I have a new child too; I'm babysitting an MD in the lab. . .

Maybe they pinched one of those jawa-sized helmet-holders from the Dark Angels. Maybe it's the equivalent of stealing the other football teams mascot.

First of all. Awesome. Very awesome.

Second of all, am I the only one who dislikes the cover? I can't paint worth a damn myself, but it just doesn't feel like quality work to me. Some of the images inside are far better.

It looks like the Dark Angels suspect the Blood Angles of harbouring a fallen brother, and sent a detachment of Watchers in the Dark to keep tabs and report any illicit activity to the inner circle.

Asmodai will be having a *private* word with Dante soon enough.

Thanks for that, Dan Brown!

I'm no artist either, but when I first saw the cover I wondered who shrunk the guy's head

I agree that the cover art has taken an obvious step in the wrong direction. Sure it contains obvious elements of art, like the tri angular subject idea, the jump dudes on the right, the priest in the middle and the standard bearer and dread on the left, all forming a big V that meets in the middle, slapping us in the face with the focus point which is the guys tiny head. But the stylized cartoony look, the forced compositional elements and the oddly improper proportions just leave it looking like a good high school painter did it for a final project. The main character looks as if they took a picture of a model holding a big grail and a big gun, then painted power over him, with no attention to the fact that a human in power armor would not move the same as if he was not wearing it. He has little human proportion arms, that are in proportion to his head, but a massive chest plate and legs. The marine on the lower right looks like every piece of his armor is reflecting light from a different angle. I could not, but I have friends that could have done a way better job, and I really don't know what the guys who okd that picture were thinking at all.

It's almost like the person who sculpted Cortez, which is the worst GW model in recent history, painted this also. They nearly have the same pose except replace grail with power fist. Mean while, the art on the 5th ed SM codes is pretty awesome.

When I first started looking into 40k as more than little plastic figures I could paint, the pictures I found online really got me interested into the game

I think that what confuses me the most, by a long shot, is why in the whole world they chose *that* cover when they have such a great pool of talent at their disposal. You put your ace on the cover, the best you can get, and the lesser works get relegated into the inside of the books.

I mean, look at the art PP publishes. The covers are grand and impressive depictions of war. Just like the GW codexes. But look at the difference...

Other than that I liked the codex, I just wish there could be an Imperial Fists codex too, so I could get some new goodness :)

The cover is very interesting for me because it's by Dave Gallagher who is a long serving GW artist and is responsible for many of the old iconic 40K images. There was an article on the GW website last month about the art of the Blood Angels and it's obvious how much John Blanche thinks about the art for the 40K universe it's all very carefully considered and yet lately most of the so called fan favourite artists have put me right off. There's a lot of pin-headed marines about which I understand is an attempt to make the suits look huge but it ruins the relationship of the anatomy. I also noticed on the Space Wolf book that none of the current artists can actually draw a wolf.

Right on Brian. When you look at the media images for Ultramarines, there is usually an attached picture of a helmet less marine, and his head is large. Or his armor is fitting. I say leave the large ilfitting suits to the terminators, and make Power Armor more form fitting.

And yes Flek. I don't doubt that the artist was talented. In cases like this, they don't just do a single mock up for a cover idea. They do dozens... and the best is taken as the final. This style was chosen. It is the direction the GW Brass decided to take.. for whatever reason.

I can only theorize on why it looks like it does. I can't tell who painted which either. The composition is obviously well done and the guy must have been painting for quite a while. What I am wondering is what makes them go for that look. It conveys an odd message to me.

Oh well. The Jawa is still the best part of the image. You should touch up the cover of yours and show people before tournament games. Bet they can't concentrate on their game after that:)
