It's been quiet... too quiet...

Make sure you read to the bottom for discussion of my Nova list.

Time for another post!  This picture shows a scratch built model for the Heroes of Armageddon project by Chris Borer. You can read more about it on Dave Taylor's blog. Which if you don't check every day, you should.  He is just outstanding.  I have tried something like this, and failed miserably. Chris is a true artist.

How bout a shot of some of the Heroes of the Blood Angels army?

I think my models hold their own next to Dante in their own little ways. :)

What is up next for me? Well more terminators I say!  I have to finish up three lingering commissions.  Number one is a small one for a client in Canada.  He asked for a squad of terminators, 2 priests, a chaplain using Lemartes model, and a dread.  Now that I am done painting the Heroes project, I can focus on getting these done.

This squad is near completion. It really just needs to be based and detailed.

This picture of the full sized Heroes of Armageddon banner I am doing does not show any more detail than the last.  The wall I am up against here is a pretty big one. Normally I have a huge table in my classroom upon which I can lay my banners and paint them. But during the summer, I have to work at home.  And alas, I don't have a huge table.  I am off to home depot today to get a big piece of plywood to mount the banner to.  Then I will be able to put it in the back room when not being worked on, and bring it out and lay it on the coffee table to work on.

Also at home depot I am going to buy some flood lights and Ott light bulbs that I can use to finally finish taking pictures of the Heroes models.  Tim's contribution is on it's way, and every thing else has been turned in including a breath taking DC Dread by Black Matt, Cho's dread, storm raven and assault squad and Joe's death company.  Joe sent me his DC Tycho, and John and Mike mailed me their Baal Pred, DC Raven and DC Dread as well.  Hopefully by tomorrow I will have all the models photographed, and waiting placement in their new Battlefoam transport when that arrives.

After all that is done, I have another lingering commission. I have had a Black Templars commission sitting on my desk since September.  The client has been slowly paying it off and as such, I have been slowly working on it. He is finally ready to finish paying, so I am gearing up the jawa machine to get it done.  This commission consists of a Marshal, Champ, 15 crusader marines, 3 razorbacks, 3 speeders and 10 terminators.

And finally I can work on my own stuff.  I played in a tournament over the weekend with a new list.  I played Mephiston, 4 ten man assault squads, 3 ac/lc preds, and 3 baal preds, two with flamestorm and one with tlac and heavy bolters.  I had a big win vs tau, and a slug fest vs BFS member Jeff O who plays a hard as nails Blood Angels list.  I held my own in that game but lost in the end.  It could have gone either way.  But in my third game I encountered the problem I feared.  This list was fairly strong, but had a few weaknesses. One would be lots of fast moving transports in an objective game.  I knew if I faced Dark Eldar in Dawn of War deployment I was sunk.  Add in objectives and forget it.  Vect's ability to seize the initiative on a 4+ is huge, deployment keeping my guns off the table first turn sucks, and not being able to see any thing is the worst.  Well, that is what I faced in round three.  I played this opponent in a previous tournament and got the drop on him, and blew him off the table.  He responded in kind.  From the start there was little I could do.  And he cleaned my clock.

I can say that even against all of the incredible DE fire power, my boys endured after deep striking.  He had to assault them to take them down.  A squad of 10 marines with a priest actually almost beat a full squad of wyches and a full squad of hellions in the assault.  In fact, they had it won. The hellions actually lost combat on a turn and ran off the table, but the wyches stayed and kept the marines tied up.  This allowed Vect to finish them off.  Vect and his Incubi hurt bad too.  They should not be assaulted.  :)  I played that game as a test of the survivability of deep striking marines in the face of massive shots.  With a less assault oriented army like GK or Guard I think they will do better.  The dark eldar, while not super strong in the assault, had the fast hitting numbers to overwhelm me.  Guard and GK without halbreds wont have that and again, those are the armies I need to worry about the most at Nova.

So any way, I have decided that 40 assault marines will make up the bulk of my army.  I started assembling them last night.  I am using Sanguinary guard bodies and jump packs with Death Company heads and arms to finish them off.  I really need a bulk of well painted assault marines for my personal army any way, since all of mine were painted 3 years ago by a noobie Jawaballs and they show their age.

What will I use to fill out my list?  Well, I have realized that there is little I will be able to do against GK at Nova.  A GK player with the standard list walked all over the tournament on Saturday. Indeed it is true that Land Raiders are dead again.  Their brief return due to the ebb and flow of melta power was fun, but now putting one on the table vs GKs is just a waste of points.  So too are small units.  Five man razor back squads are just as dead vs GKs as Land Raiders. Hence my four full assault squads.  I'm still digging Mephiston though. Simply because I like my conversion, and he is fun to play.  But sadly, I simply don't feel that Blood Angels can field any thing to counter the GK threat.  By doubling the amount of hard hitting shots that even the shootiest of armies could produce, GKs have overcome the 5th edition cover save equalizer, effectively breaking the game.  I don't think even the best Blood Angels players could compete against a competent player with a GK list.  I'm certainly going to try, and will do the 9th legion proud, but I am going to the Nova with realistic expectations.  By the way I am still maintaining that at least half of sixteen armies in the top bracket will be GKs, and am calling a full third of the armies in the invitational as GKs, with them winning both.

I am hoping to go 3-1 on day one at the Nova, setting me up for another shot at Renaissance man.  Last year I lost by .01 points.  Essentially the one point one of the judges docked me in paint scoring because my terminators were not on the same resin bases as the rest of my army. (I was too lazy to rebase them the week before Nova.)  I think if I go 3-1 again I can have a chance at taking it.  Of course I have to finish my 40 marines, and that leads me to another question.  What else do I play?  Since I am going for a competitive list, that looks good, I think I come back to the list I played on Saturday. I already have my three well painted predator tanks.  Do I paint three new Baal Preds and jazz them up with some hand painting and go for it?  How about going with my termies in their land raider?  The point is that if I accept the fact that I know I won't win vs GKs, but play my list that I know does well vs every thing else, can I go 3-1 and swipe Renaissance?

If I go by that strategy, here is what I am planning.

Mephiston

4x ten man assault squads
all have PWs
2 have two melta
2 have two flamer

3 priests.
2 with jp and pw
1 bare

terminators in raider
1x hammer
4x claws
extra armor
multi melta

elite chaplain

In the month I have I can make this army look good enough to go for Renaissance, and it can win 3 games giving me a shot.  What will I do vs GKs with the raider? Deep strike.  Let it hit the ground and pop smoke. They are going to have to kill it, then deal with fearless, feel no pain termies. I Start Mephiston as far up as I can behind LoS blocking terrain, and deep strike the rest.  I probably won't beat the knights, but I know I will put the fear of Sanguinius in them! :)  With a little luck of the draw, the right opponents, and friendly scatter dice, I have a chance.  That lines me up for the next day. With most of the auto win GK armies in the top bracket, I will hopefully have a shot at winning whatever bracket I fall into. Either the 3-1 or 2-2. Hopefully calamity does not befall me and leave me in the 1-3 or worse!  (I am still trying to get last years 1-3 finish at The Battle for Salvation out of my mind.)

More to come!

Light on the Heroes pics...

I did manage to get a pic of my termy squad before my camera started being a dork.

Well I can show you these two shots of John Dickerman's pieces.

And here is a bad pic of my land raider.  The cameras tarted getting stupid here.

I did get Dante in today, and I can tell you, it was like holding a little nugget of gold.  Non-metallic gold that is.  The model is without a doubt the most beautiful model I have ever held.  Thomas Schadle is awesome.

Some day I hope to be so good.

What else do I have in the pipes? Well in addition to finishing up 3 lingering commissions, I am doing Ron Saikowski's Armageddon banner!

You can just make out the lines, I drew his image on a full sized 3x8 foot banner.  I start painting this weekend.

Ok, lots more coming up.  Exciting week for the Heroes of Armageddon!

Lord Dante

Hi guys, I just posted this up on the Heroes blog, but I figured mine gets a bit more exposure and wanted to get these pics out to you right away.  Words do little for this model. I will have more pics for you on Friday of the rest of the army. Dante painted by Thomas Schadle.

All I can say is get your donations in. If you already did, donate more. You want this.

Photography help?

So, I need some help taking pictures.  I understand lighting and all that, the issue I have is how to use my DSLR camera!  I have a Canon 30D, and when I try to take pictures with it, it focuses on one tiny spot of the model, like it's face, then blurs out the rest.  It is impossible to take a clear picture of a group.

Here is an example. The camera focused on the wings of the banner. As things get further
away, they get blurrier.  I wan't to line this squad up and get all five models in focus.

I know vaguely what causes this, but can any one give me some advice on how to set my 30D properly?  Thanks!

Last Heroes WIP shot!

Ok folks. This will be the last WIP post. The next heroes post will be showing all the finished models as professionally photographed as I can get them. For now, here is what I have so far. Of course the pictures are washed out from the flash, and my DSLR gets way closer than any eyes can, but here you go.

Lemartes almost done. I gave him a winged jump pack. That punk Astro got Lemartes job, he wont be the only one to get wings.

Corbs

Terminator assault squad with banner.

The two former HQs, reduced to squad upgrades.

This guy still needs some love.

Joe Johnson sent me his finished milky creamy Death Company!

I still can't post up Ron's standard bearer because he has not done so on FTW yet.  Grr.

Here is the teaser of his banner.

But here is John Dickerman's Death Co. Dread!

Mike Cho sent me this pic of his dread:

He decided to get funky with the weathering.

Black Matt posted this pic up of his:

I'm still waiting on pics from Tim showing off his Scouts and Storm Raven, Tom with his Dante, John with his Baal Pred and Cho with pics of this assault squad he has been talking about!

I may get one more post up this weekend as I finish off these models.

The order for the Battlefoam trays was sent in. Romeo is providing each army with a huge transport. The BA transport will have room for an additional 30 infantry or so and some tanks.

Here are the custom dice from Chessex!

And the custom templates from Gale Force Nine.

Things are coming together!  DONATE! You don't want to be on the sidelines on this one.

Heroes of Armageddon Swag!

Hey guys,

As Goatboy said, the light at the end of the tunnel is glowing VERY bright.

Gale Force 9 sent us this years customized measuring tools and templates!

I would like to thank them for their continued support in making our project awesome!  Each army got a customized set of templates. Can you tell which one is the Blood Angels?

I don't have any updates for you at the moment on my goodies.  I have 3 of the 5 terminators done and will finish another today. They take me about 5 hours to do, each.  The sad part is no photograph will ever catch the love that I put into them.  I will try though!

I will have more pics on Friday of the finished squad, and hopefully much more.

Jawaballs

Heroes of Armageddon crunch time!

Well the team is kicking it into full gear.  Here is a quicky update from my terminators!

3 mostly done. And it is only Tuesday!

What else is there?  Well Joe Johnson finished his Death Company.  Here is a sneak peak to what I am going to show you on Friday's update post.

Thankfully Joe's painting is far better than his photography.  I will shoot some pics when they arrive. They are enroute as we speak!

Here are the jump packs for the assault squad Mike Cho is painting.  Triple thrusters!  Too cool. FIND MORE HERE.

And here is the chapter banner again.  I have a picture of the entire finished Chapter Bearer model, but I promised I would let Ron post it up first.  Follow FROM THE WARP for that this week.

Much more to come as the Blood Angels build team finishes up their projects and puts a wrap on the army.

Now you have to ask yourself. Have you donated enough?  I can let you in on a secret. The project has made a lot of money for Doctors Without Borders.  But can we make more?  Go without soda this week and send in another 5 bucks.  One less beer at happy hour will get you 5 more chances to win one of these fabulous armies.  I wish I could enter!  You know you have been wanting to do it for three months now... hit that button at the top right!

You have to be IN IT TO WIN IT!

I would love to see this army go to one of my readers.  Go get it!

Rediscovering Angels Part 10: Honor Guard

Hey there folks, it's been a while, but it's me again- Xaereth, from Delusions of Grandeur!  Today I want to talk about Honor Guard and what they can do for a Blood Angel army, in a competitive context.  For those of you interested, I've done quite a few other articles here for the Jawa, and I've compiled the links to them here.  So, feel free to read up on them, should you so desire :-p

So, let's talk about Honor Guards for Blood Angels.  This squad is likely one of the most 'hotly contested' units in the book (haha, if anything could be said to be hotly contested about Blood Angels any more), simply because nobody agrees on how they should be used, or whether they're even cost-efficient at all.  I think we can come up with a few good ideas on how they can be used, and in what situations they can really shine.  Heh, or maybe not, and we'll find that Honor Guards are pure rubbish and nobody should take them.  We'll see :)

Well, let's get the obvious stuff out of the way first, so we're all on the same page.  What's good about Honor Guard?
  • Priest hidden in 'retinue'
  • Lots of special weapon options
  • Lots of weapons options
  • Lots of options in general, really
  • Better statline than average marine
What's bad about Honor Guard?
  • Limited to a maximum of 5 dudes
  • Have to pay for their mode of transportation (as opposed to Assault Squads)
  • Upgrades get expensive quick
  • Limited to how many HQ choices have been taken
So, pretty obvious stuff.  Priest is cool, price to actually field a small 5-man unit isn't so cool.  I suppose now we can look at a little more advanced stuff- first let's look at a price comparison of an Honor Guard vs. 5-man Assault Squad w/ Priest, in a Rhino.

Honor Guard w/ 4x melta, HF Razorback- 210 Points
Assault Squad w/ 1x melta, HF Razorback, Priest- 198 Points

If we took out a single melta from the Honor Guard, the prices would be nearly identical.  Please don't misunderstand this comparison as what I personally think 'the way' is to run Honor Guard/Assault Squads, it's merely a price comparison.

What we can learn from this comparison is that Honor Guards, while not scoring, are more points-efficient than Assault Squads containing a Priest.  When equipped with similar wargear, they can not only carry more wargear than the RAS (Regular Assault Squad), but they also have a 'hidden' priest in there, giving the unit less total Kill Points you have to worry about.  The flip side to this is that the Priest isn't customizable, but I've never been a huge fan of getting my extremely important IC's into combat anyways, since I'm paying the points for him to buff units, not to kill 1 marine (or Ork!) per combat phase, lol.

So, we know that if we need a utility unit that doesn't necessarily need to score, Honor Guard is likely the way to go.  Since every player has to take at least one HQ per army, we will always have at least one Honor Guard as a possibility.

Now let's take a look at a few different roles an Honor Guard can fill in an army.

Role #1:  Plasma Bunker

Honor Guard w/ 4x Plasma Guns, Rhino- 225 Points

This one for me is the one I always think about for Honor Guard, since that's what I generally always do with my Company Command Squads in my IG army.  Not only is this your only reliable means of getting Plasma in the entire book (Sternguard are one-hit wonders), they have a built-in resistance to overheating called Feel No Pain.  8 shots vs. pretty much anything in cover will only kill about 2 dudes, but they could also pop tanks to a limited extent, or hunt Monstrous Creatures (like anyone brings those these days, lol).

I'd actually say that this is a generally poor choice for the Honor Guard.  They can't assault after they blow their load, and like I said earlier, they only cause a little bit of damage from their barrage.  Against good players, Honor Guard w/ plasma isn't amazing.  You may say "but, didn't you say you tooled your Guard CCS's the same way?" Well, yes I did.  However, those IG units are not only cheaper (180 w/ 9 shots vs. 225 w/ 8 shots), but also have built-in orders to make targets reroll successful cover saves, and have vehicles all of them can shoot out of whereas the max for the HG is a Rhino w/ 2 dudes.  IG do it much, much better than the Honor Guard ever will, sadly.  Luckily, most Blood Angels armies have no need of Plasma, as they have access to other things that can replace it.

Role #2:  Melta Bunker

Honor Guard w/ 4x Melta Guns, Razorback w/ Heavy Flamer- 210 Points

This one might be my personal favorite.  They can zoom up 12", turn the Razor around, disembark 2.9", and shoot their melta, giving them a nearly 21" threat range.  Sure, any other unit in the game with melta and a vehicle has the same threat range, but these guys not only have 4 meltas to go with them, they also have FNP, to make removing them much harder than the average melta suicide squad.  One might even argue that it isn't a suicide squad, since it's survivable enough to make an opponent shift significant resources to wipe them out entirely.

Role #3:  Utility Squad

Honor Guard w/ 2x Melta Guns, 2x Flamers, Rhino-  195 Points

What we get from this squad is the ability to bring down tanks, hordes, and a biggish FNP/FC bubble though the utilization of the Rhino chassis.  This squad is equipped to do any number of things, and can shoot all weapons then charge in (furiously) afterward.  I'm not sure I subscribe to this 'jack of all trades' mentality, but it does provide a good 'swiss army knife' -like unit.

A variant:

One variant might be this squad in a Las/Plas Razorback, surrounded by 15x Missile Launcher Devastators.  They can lay down some good fire, provide the FNP Bubble, and provide a solid counter-assault/shooting threat when enemies get too close.  You could of course do the same with a RAS + Priest, but as we discussed earlier, this way is far more cost-effective.  Simply including a Priest with the Devs might be another 'easier' way, but if that happens, it forces the Devs to bunch up quite a bit.  With the extra inches a Razorback chasis provides, the squads can actually be spread out quite a bit, since you measure the FNP/FC aura from the vehicle's hull.

Role #4:  Close combat Uberness

Honor Guard w/ 2x Melta Guns, 4x Lightning Claws, 2x Storm Shields, Chapter Banner, Rhino- 315 Points

This option is pretty expensive, but it does put out quite a few attacks.  Claws are statistically better than Swords against just about any opponent, despite less attacks.  This squad is going to be far more efficient with either a Chaplain or a Librarian (I'd pick a Libby, personally), giving them rerolls to hit.  If they do get rerolls + charge, they'll cause 10(ish) power wounds and 2 regular wounds to a WS4 T4 opponent, not counting the character accompanying them.  They can also open tanks with their two meltas, have FNP, and can even operate against other power weapons, with their own Storm Shields.

They're pretty expensive though.  315 points to wipe out a marine squad (or even nearly 5 TH/SS Termies) is alright, but they have to kill a lot of stuff to warrant their price tag.  Against some squads with higher Initiative, this squad will flounder, and if they get charged, their effectiveness is far less.  Not to mention, it's not really 315 points to wipe that marine squad- it's more like 415, after you add the Librarian.  Not my favorite choice, but these guys can fill the combat role if you want- some armies have enough shooting and need the extra combat.  Cool squad to customize/convert too :)

Role #5:  Jump Infantry Support

Honor Guard w/ 4x Melta, Jump Packs-  205 Points

These guys just jump around with your other 50-60 Jump Marines, and provide melta/FNP support.  Cool squad, I think I'd rather these guys look like this, honestly:

Honor Guard w/ 4x Melta, Rhino

It loses a little bit of the theme 60+ Jump Marines have, but it also gives a bigger FNP bubble for your squads, allowing them to spread out a little bit, for the same price.  It also allows a little more protection for a small squad, so opponents don't just turn their AP2/3 long-range fire at that squad immediately (since they won't have anything better to fire at, given the lack of diverse targets)

I think I saw Jawa's NOVA army will be going this route, though the Honor Guard will be Jumping around with the rest of them, which works.  I know that if I play him though, they'll be the first target for my Dark Lances :)

Conclusion:

Well, what more can I say?  Honor Guard can provide a lot for your army, and fill a bunch of roles that a Blood Angel player may have need of filling.  Combat, cheap melta, or FNP/FC coverage, these guys can do it all, and can even do it all well.  Not every army has need of these Role-players in their army, but it's nice to know these guys exist as an option, and can be used for pretty much anything.

Thoughts?  Questions?  Comments?  How do YOU tool your Honor Guard?

As an aside, hope you enjoyed the 'honor' pictures I found on Google.  Some of them I have no idea what they have to do with honor, but they were funny so I stuck them up there!  lol
