Honor Guard Update 5. www.jawaballsproductions.com

Ok, in this update, I am playing with an internal lightsource coming from the glow on my power fist model. I drasticly enhanced the brightness of the glowing power fist, and then used those same highlights to shine on the armor. I made some circular shapes on the helm and edged it onto the edges of the armor, and almsot covered the red of the fist with blue highlight... Did I do to much? Is it just too messy? Ive never done this before... can any one think of any white dwarf articles where an artist did something similar?

I attached the shield onto the arm of the champion, but am not sold on the arm pose. This arm is extended out shooting, rather then drawn in using the shield as a defense. In a way I kind of like this though, it is different from how you usually see combat shields on assault squads. It is almost secondary to his main intention... "screw the defenses... kill that genestealer!"

Any input? At this point, feel free to be uber critical. Any input is ok. It will help me look at the models from different angles. Thanks for all the input so far!

from the angle that you took the pictures the sword arm seems to reading an atack, and the shield one is also attacking, that seems to counter the porpuose of the shield.

I think the shine from the powerfist looks pretty good, far better than anything I could do I'm sure. One thought I had was, and this is thinking about shine in general is that it might look better if it is a little darker/duller than the light source, so if you made the highlights to perhaps the second to last stage used on the fist, that would represent the fact it is reflected light and not a light source in itself.

It is only a thought though so feel free to ignore. As I said at the start it is far better than I could achieve.

Werner, the model is charging, with the sword held back ready to swing and the bolter extended forward to fire. But you are right, it is sort of counter purpose to have the shield and not keep it ready for use...

BG thanks! Any and all input is good. Feel free to think out loud. I think I will paint up some other models to practice on so I dont have to keep redoing this guy. :)

I've seen brighter glows for powerfists. I know it's not a White Dwarf article, but she's a really accomplished painter(she even made a tutorial for this effect). There's a sword glow she did that was much softer, though.

jawdropping the lighting awesome off the fist i think it would be cool if the swords were like this 2 and for when u do dante i say do him in nmm it would go nicel with the lush red of the honour guard and make him seem more sacred

Darcsoul that was exactlly what I wanted thanks!

The lighting looks good. Its a great idea.

I would say NMM Dante is the way to go but I would keep it consistant and make the whole unit have NMM on the bolters, swords etc.

Are you going to GD Baltimore? It would be cool to meet up for a game.

Yup Fritz and I are going to be there! We are probably going to get a club table and set it up for any one who wishes to get in some games against us to come play. Should be lots of fun!

About NMM... I am a little hesitant. I am fearful about trying to do something I have never really done for the Golden Daemon. I do mix lots of brown into my golds, so I think i can pull it off with the metalics any way. But as far as that is concerned, i decided to stick with what I do best. Plus I think NMM is more of just a fad. I honestly dont agree that NMM looks better then well done metalic.

power fist look's good, blue table painting does a lot of this type of reflected lighting affect, check out there pic galley, should confirm that you have nailed it.

Dude that powere fist looks great

Thanks James! How do we feel about the 3 blotches of highlight on the right leg? On the head, I sort of reflected the thumb and 3 knuckles... and tried to do it again on the leg, but am not happy with it. Also, I am worried about the blue shine on the chest straps... should I mute most of the gold out with blues? I have never seen a vibrant blue glow on gold plates before, but I would have to think that the gold itself would be almost nonexistent and instead just be shades of greenish blue... any one?

the power fist looks awesome!
though i think the glow on the helmet and the leg looks a bit wrong
it looks more(only my opinion) like the armour is torn rathen then it's glow from the fist
maybe you should dull it down a little
make it look like it's disappearing slowly

but then, it's far better then i can do

Hi Jawa, I think the fist itself and the light source highlighting down the wrist and up onto the helmet look awesome. I would say though that given the angle the fist is being held at, I can't see light reflecting down onto the thigh that way. If anything is going to reflect from that angle it will be the edge of the clenched fist so the light would be more circular blocks in pattern. Just my thoughts on the light sourcing. Otherwise they are looking superb.

Hmmm looks good but I think the light source is a little off (or at least how I envision a powerfist)...If the fist should glow strong enough to even reflect on on the leg then it certainly illuminates the inner arm more strongly. Also with the way he holds the arm I'd probably drop the leg shine completely and go for more excessive reflection on chest and helm . And as I mentioned before shade the light up until the edge of the shoulderpad.
Just my 2 cents :) feel free to ignore everything but you wanted uber critical :P

Dude, before I was allowed to graduate, I had to go before every Art professor in the school with my portfolio and let them rip into me for 3 hours. Believe me, I left there with no ego. But the point of it was to teach me that criticism is hard to take, and I accept it all. You are right about the leg by the way, it has already been taken out, I will be reworking the head too. :)
